 Home Helpers to Sponsor Noted Author, Jo Huey, speaking on “Getting Through the Holidays Using the Ten Absolutes of Caregiving for Someone with Dementia”
The holidays are a special time for families to gather together and share wonderful food, fellowship, and recall lifelong memories. But the holidays can also be a time of emotional stress when loved ones are dealing with the challenges of caring for family members or loved ones with life-altering diseases like Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders. Home Helpers®, a Chicago-based companion-care and in-home assistance provider, notes that the holidays are busy and stressful for anyone. However, those challenges are compounded when one is attempting to “do it all” while caring for a loved one with dementia symptoms. “We felt this was a great opportunity to do something special for those who, every day, put their loved ones’ needs before their own,” said Mary Doepke, RN, owner of Home Helpers. Home Helpers and The Birches Assisted Living in Clarendon Hills have teamed up to bring in noted speaker and author, Jo Huey, the Alzheimer’s Advocate®, to conduct a special 2-hour evening seminar, which will give participants the opportunity to learn strategies for coping with loved ones with dementia and help them enjoy the holiday season by making the most of their time together. Huey, the author of “Alzheimer’s Disease: Help and Hope” and “Don’t Leave Momma Home with the Dog” is best known for her tool, the “Ten Absolutes”, which shows caregivers how to take their most common everyday challenges and respond to each with minor, but powerful, behavior changes on the part of the caregiver that provide positive results. “Changing chaos to peace, tears to smiles, and struggles to loving memories is not as overwhelmingly difficult as one would think,” notes Huey. “It takes only a small change in your approach to caregiving to produce a positive, loving response and enhance the quality of life for everyone involved.” This FREE seminar will be held on Thursday, December 13, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at The Birches 215 55th Street in Clarendon Hills, Illinois.
