Chicken soup and hot tea are known to treat winter’s most common ailments. But there is one epidemic that can’t be treated with these home remedies – cabin fever.

The dark, cold days of winter can become downright boring, especially for those who cannot easily get out of the house. But there are ways to make the most of it. After all, we can’t change the weather, but we can change how we feel about it.

Cures for Cabin FeverHere are some ideas for caregivers to share with their elderly clients or loved ones. They’re easy, inexpensive and sure to shorten our long wait for spring.

1. Take this time to organize pictures, create scrapbooks or just enjoy those you have made in the past.
2. Take in a movie. The theater is warm, and the popcorn is, too! Check local theaters for senior discount days. Some even show classic movies!
3. Visit the local bookstore and enjoy a hot cup of tea or a latte while perusing the latest titles.
4. Get organized! Slowly go through closets or files, work together on shredding items and getting rid of clutter.
5. Ask your elderly loved one to share a skill with you. Learn to crochet, knit or cook while reminding your loved one of the activity he or she enjoys.
6. Take this time to show your client or loved one the wonders of modern technology! Use your Facebook account to share photos of grandchildren, send an email to catch up with a friend, or enjoy a video chat with someone far away!
7. Work on a jigsaw puzzle! It works the mind, the eyes and nothing beats that sense of accomplishment you feel as the picture unfolds.
8. Hit the mall! Even if you don’t need to shop, the exercise alone is worth the trip.
9. Play cards. Large-print cards are made for those with low vision. Can’t remember the rules? A quick internet search will tell you all you need to know.
10. Warm the house with a batch of cookies. Not only will the oven add a little heat to the kitchen, nothing smells better than fresh-baked cookies.
11. Roast a marshmallow on the fireplace. Of course, you have to be careful, but there’s something about watching a fire crackle and pop that makes the cold world outside melt away.

A new radio presentation and show is being instigated from Oak Brook Terrace. The show called “The Wedding Expo Show” will begin airing on Sundays from 1:00p to 2:00p. Laura Lukasik, Viking Travel’s General Manager is taping a 15 minute segment on the subject of travel associated with weddings. This will be aired on the new show.

Travel is becoming an integral part of much of a wedding’s planning and execution. With destinations dedicating more of their respective venues to honeymoons and even the actual wedding itself, Viking has created a specialist section of the agency to weddings. Laura is spearheading this activity and has already booked a number of groups to special wedding destinations.
